The book was first published in French in 1961, under the title Les conquérants de l'inutile. It was translated into Spanish by José Manuel Álvarez Flórez and published in 2001 by Ediciones Desnivel, with a preface by Jean-Christophe Rufin. The book is illustrated with photographs and drawings by Terray and his companions.
The title of the book reflects Terray's philosophy of mountaineering, which he considered as an end in itself, not a means to achieve fame or fortune. He wrote: "We were not conquerors of anything, but rather discoverers of something that had always existed, but which we had never seen before. We were not looking for anything useful, but for something beautiful, something that would fill our souls with joy and wonder."
Terray was one of the most prominent and accomplished climbers of his generation, who participated in some of the most remarkable expeditions of the 20th century. He was a member of the French team that made the first ascent of Annapurna in 1950, the first 8,000-meter peak ever climbed. He also climbed Makalu in 1955, Fitz Roy in 1952, Cerro Torre in 1958, and many other peaks in Europe, Africa, America and Asia. He died in a rockfall accident in the Vercors Massif in 1965, at the age of 44.
The book is widely regarded as one of the best and most honest accounts of the spirit and challenges of mountaineering. It is a testimony of Terray's passion, courage, humor and humility, as well as his respect for nature and his fellow climbers. It is also a reflection on the meaning and value of human adventure, beyond any utilitarian purpose.
